In 1889 a French corsetiere and feminist named Herminie Cadolle, wanted to free women from the confines of the straight jacket like corsets of the times. She invented a two piece underwear garment that cinched at the waist but had a separate brassiere with shoulder straps, allowing the women to feel supported while breathing easier. In 1914 debutante Mary Phelps Jacob wanted to wear a sheer dress to a ball, but couldn’t because her corset would show through. Refusing to admit defeat, she had her maid sew together 2 handkerchiefs and proceeded to dance the night away as the belle of the ball. Soon women all over New York City started asking her to make them the special brassiere too. Mary eventually patented the design and sold it to a bra maker, who went on to make a fortune off of it 30 years later. 

1914-WWI Defeats The Corset

With the onset of World War 1, women were asked to make several sacrifices. First give up wearing corsets to help conserve metal for the war effort and then take up active jobs while the men were away. Once women abandoned the corsets, they refused to go back to them after the war had finished. Thus ushering in the new era of the bra. 

1930’s- What Size Are You?

The 1930’s saw several advancements in bra technology. The seamless bra was invented and the use of measurement charts and standard cup sizes made a shift from one size fits all to snugger more personalized matches. 

 1950’s- The Atomic Age & Bullet Bras

The Atomic Age brought an obsession with all things futuristic, from cars and furniture to the iconic bullet bras. Hollywood celebrities like Maryln Monroe and Jane Mansfield became known as the Sweater Girls for wearing tight sweaters over their giant torpedo bras. 

1960s - The Playboy Bunny Outfit

 1977- The Jockbra

In 1977 two female joggers were fed up with having to run in their regular bras. The underwire would chafe and the straps kept slipping off of their shoulders. Plus they couldn’t take their shirts off to cool down while they ran like the men could. After one of their husbands jokingly grabbed a jock strap and put it around his chest, saying he’d found the solution, they got the brilliant idea to sew two jock straps together. Birthing the very first sports bra. Originally called the Jockbra, they eventually renamed it the Jogbra. The Jogbra was a major success and they went on to sell their design in 1990 to a company that would later become Champion. 

1990’s Celebrity Lingerie & Victoria’s Secret

All through the 80’s and 90’s celebrities like Madonna brought lingerie into the world of outerwear. Making bras a visible part of the outfit. The Wonder Bra finally gained worldwide popularity and the era of the push-up bra began. 

1990s - Victoria’s Secret

Founded in 1977 Victoria’s Secret didn’t hit its stride until the 1990’s. With the advent of their annual fashion show and their mega popular Angels campaign they averaged over a billion dollars in sales annually, with 350 stores across the nation. In 2000, model Gisele Bundchen made headlines for walking the runway wearing a $15 million diamond and ruby encrusted Fantasy Bra. The most expensive item of lingerie ever made at the time.

All through high school I was a 36 DD. A fact that I enjoyed since my initials were DD and most of my friends called me Double D. Then during my freshman year of college I gained a ton of weight thanks to a steady diet of giant chocolate chip cookies from the cafeteria and Papa John’s Pizza. 

Some women when they gain weight, feel it in their butt and hips, or as a general all over body expansion. Not me. I only gain weight in two places, my stomach and breasts. By the end of Freshman year I looked six months pregnant and had two bowling balls strapped to my chest.

After accidentally exposing my nipples for like the tenth time in public, I finally decided it was time to go bra shopping. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Ohhh yay, bra shopping sounds sexy and fun!” And it can be, especially if you have smaller perkier breasts that fit into all the sexy styles and name brand bras. While my girlfriends in high school bought cute and colorful bras from Victoria's Secret and Calvin Klein I was forced to buy bras that had more depth and support, always in somber colors for some reason.

So I gathered my courage and walked into the lingerie section at Nordstrom. As I flipped through the racks of bras with sizes from DDD to G, I started gritting my teeth in anger. DD bras are not cheap, but the bigger you go the higher the price gets. Plus it was harder and harder to find sexy looking bras in fun colors. All of the bigger sizes came in either nude, white or black and had giant straps that would show under tank tops. 

Finally an older saleswoman came over to help me. She took one look at my overflowing breasts in their too small bra and quickly ushered me into a dressing room to be measured. I’d never been properly fitted before. 

“I stood there dumbfounded as she followed me into the small room, closed the door and ordered me to strip. ”

Afraid she’d start pulling my clothes off herself, I quickly took my shirt off. As I stood there topless with my giant breasts bursting out all over the place, waiting for her to begin measuring, she shook her head and motioned with her fingers for me to take my bra off too. 

This was before I’d experienced the freeing sensation of going topless at the beach. At the time I was extremely insecure about my weight gain and not eager to get naked in front of a mirror let alone another person. But the stern look on the woman’s face told me to stop being a child and woman up. So I reached behind me and unhooked my bra. Letting my massive mounds fall free and naked. 

She grabbed the measuring tape that was wrapped around her neck and quickly started measuring me. Casually lifting each breast so she could get the tape around my rib cage. It felt professional and was very quick. 

“I still couldn’t help but think that I was being felt up by the cold bony fingers of a 75 year old woman. To be fair it was the most action I’d had in months. ”

Afterwards she left and came back with a series of large old lady bras for me to try on. Each had massive cups the size of my face, with thick straps and a matronly look. Dismayed, I tried each one on with tears in my eyes as I faced my new reality. I was a nineteen year old girl now forced to wear the kind of bras my grandmother would wear. Sure they fit great and my giant knockers felt secure and supported but I’d never be able to wear any sexy dresses or low cut tops. I’d be restricted to turtle neck sweaters for the rest of my life. 

“What’s worse, all of the bras were designed to lock down and minimize my huge tits. Not lift them up or accentuate my new gorgeous rack. ”

Plus each one cost between $60 to $80. A huge amount of money for a broke ass college student to pay. 

After trying on over twenty different bras I finally settled on two that were the sexiest of the bunch, although nowhere near as alluring as I’d hoped for. The saleswoman was not happy with my choices. I’d still gone with bras that were a cup size too small and she’d wanted me to get ones that fit properly and provided the best support. 

“But I wasn’t about to pay $80 for a bra that was never going to get me laid. Back pain be damned! ”

I eventually became more confident and secure in my new body, but still cringe every time I have to go bra shopping. 

This experience happened over twenty years ago and I’m happy to say that the lingerie industry has progressed a bit since then and now celebrates body positivity. So those of us blessed with voluptuous curves can finally buy bras in lots of different styles and sexy colors. Of course the prices are still high though!

I experienced my first topless beach at the age of 19, in sunny southern Spain. The men wore speedos and the women wore skimpy bikini bottoms and nothing else. Just naked boobies as far as the eye could see. 

My girlfriends and I were shocked to witness entire families on the beach, with little kids running around playing. While their moms and grandmothers sat in chairs, handing out snacks, smoking cigarettes, and sunning themselves topless. Despite the fact that we felt way over-dressed in our string bikinis, we kept our tops on. None of us were brave enough to be the first to free our girls. 

Each secretly afraid that our breasts would be judged by the other girls. 

What surprised me the most was my own embarrassment. I grew up at the beach. I spent most of my life dressed in nothing but a bikini and a pair of sunglasses. I even used to surf at Blacks Beach, San Diego’s famous nude beach.

Then imagine what happens the second you jump up for a wave. 

I've been told it’s the same sensation as covering your entire groin, stomach and chest area with duct tape and then quickly ripping it off. 

So while I was used to riding waves and looking at people frolicking naked on the beach, I was absolutely not prepared to join them. This act of prudishness bothered me. The next time I went backpacking across Europe, I was 21 and traveling alone. This time I was determined to sit on a beach in Spain and bare my breasts. Just like the local girls, who acted so cool, confident and calm in their toplessness. That’s the thing with topless beaches. No one actually cares. European men don’t sit there and gawk, or start trying to titty-twist every pair of nipples they see.

The women with big boobs don’t point and laugh at the women with small breasts and no one cares about the size or color of your nipples. Something I was very worried about because I’ve always felt like I have giant nipples. Everyone just acts so normal and blase about it. The best part was swimming topless. There is no greater feeling in this world for a big tittied woman than having the experience of her hefty mounds floating weightless in the sea.

Warning, many of these beaches are completely clothing optional so be prepared to see a lot more than just glistening nipples.

What do you get when you combine 840 miles of coastline with a massive free-love hippy scene and countless state and national parks? A whopping amount of nude beaches, at least 33 by our count. Stretching from the south to the north, you won’t have to travel far to get your bare sunbathing booby fix.

1. Blacks Beach - San Diego

Considered one of the oldest and longest clothing-optional beaches in the country, Blacks Beach is famous for its wicked surf breaks and family-friendly nude beach. The fact that it’s difficult to get to is one of the reasons it’s remained a haven for those who love to play naked beach volleyball. Ya that’s a thing. Know the boundary: nudity is tolerated on the northern state-beach stretch but technically banned on the city-run south end, and citations happen occasionally.

2. Baker Beach- San Francisco

No surprise that the hippy capital of the world should have more nude beaches than anywhere else in the country. Baker Beach might not have the best swimming options. It’s known for its dangerous rip tides. But it does have a strong Burning Man vibe with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and lots of naked frisbee throwing. Florida

With 1,350 miles of shoreline and a love for “Girls Gone Wild” Florida makes it very easy to see as many glistening tities as you want to. We found 12 nude beaches listed in the Sunshine State and countless more with topless options.

3. Haulover Beach - Miami

Haulover Beach is the most popular nude beach in the country, getting up to 7,000 visitors in one day during Nude Recreation Week in July. The northern section is an officially designated clothing-optional area (lifeguard towers 12–16, per Miami-Dade Parks). We’re not even sure if we could handle that many oiled nipples in one place. Definitely worth a try though. At least drunken spring breakers won’t have to worry about pesky nipple slips here.

4. Playalinda- Cape Canaveral Seashore

This might be the most epic naked booby beach on the list. In one place you can see topless tanning beauties while drinking a beer and watching rockets rise. That’s not a euphemism. There are actual rockets launching from the nearby Kennedy Space Center.

Closure warning: The clothing-optional tradition here is unofficial, at the far north end (Lot 13). As of Oct 19, 2026, Lots 9–13 and beach access north of Boardwalk 8 are closed because of flooding and erosion, and a National Park Service plan may close the northern lots permanently. Check nps.gov/cana before you go.

Hawaii

What’s not to love about Hawaii? Paradise with tropical beaches, rugged volcanic scenery and drinks that come in coconuts with little umbrellas. Add to all of that the fact that sunbathing topless is legal on most beaches and you have the ultimate recipe for relaxation.

5. Kehena Beach- Island of Hawaii

With over 10 nude beaches on the islands, it’s hard to choose just one to visit. However, when you combine the exquisitely exotic black sand beaches of Kehena Beach with bare breasts, it’s impossible to resist.

Safety and access: Kehena is reached by a steep, rocky trail off Highway 137. There are no facilities or lifeguards, and the surf is strong. Nudity is tolerated here, not legal.

6. Las Vegas- Nevada

While there are no nude beaches in Las Vegas, there are a whole bunch of hotels and casinos that offer nude and European style sunbathing at their pools. Between naked weekend pool parties and topless poolside clubs, women don’t even have to bother with swimsuit shopping here. One update: The Mirage closed in July 2024, so its Bare Pool Lounge is gone. Our favorite spots to see skin in Sin City are:

• Tao Beach at the Venetian- voted the best club and pool party in the nation.

• The Sapphire Pool Gentlemen’s Club- Strippers swimming naked in a pool with bottle service. Enough said.

• New: Topless-optional European pools still operate at Wynn (hotel guests, 21+) and Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay. Encore’s European pool is listed as closed.

7. Gunnison Beach- New Jersey

This beach is right across the water from New York City, giving it a great view of the Manhattan skyline. Making this one of the country’s busiest nude beaches. Originally it was an army base where soldiers would swim naked off duty. After the base closed down, the nudity stuck around. We also love that this is another one of those rare beaches where you can drink alcohol and be naked. God bless America. (Alcohol rules may have changed, so check the National Park Service first.) In July 2026 the park shortened the mobi-mat path, so access is harder.

8. Collins Beach - Oregon

This clothing-optional beach is actually on the Columbia River just outside of Portland. We love that Portlandians are pro nudity. Pacific Northwest weather only allows for a few months of naked frolicking throughout the year, so next time it’s sunny and you're in Portland, run out to Sauvie Island and get some vitamin D. New for 2026: a Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit ($10/day, $30/season) is required on weekends and holidays from June 15 through Labor Day. The beach is only partly clothing-optional, so look for the sign reading “Entering Clothing-Optional Area.”

9. Moshup Beach - Massachusetts

This idyllic Martha's Vineyard spot is the perfect place to watch the sunset and see some gloriously naked breasts. We love the contrast between the typically conservative Martha’s Vineyard vibe and this wild hedonistic hotspot. Nudity is tolerated at the cliff end, where a sign warns of nude sunbathing, but it is technically illegal: Aquinnah’s town bylaw still bans public nudity (fine up to $50). The cliffs are sacred to the Wampanoag, so no climbing and no taking clay. Just think how much better that Jaws movie poster would have been if the girl had been swimming naked.

10. Hippie Hollow - Texas

Just outside of Austin sits Lake Travis. Home to the Hippie Hollow State Park. The only clothing optional state park in Texas. So not only can you swim around bare buoyant boobies, but you can also go for a naked hike. Entry is $8 in cash ($3 for seniors), it’s 18+ only, and it’s open 9am–7pm daily. No glass, no public drinking, and no photos without consent. We love to see a hippie stronghold right in the middle of the state's capitol.

• No photos of other people. Ever. At Hippie Hollow it's an official rule and can get you kicked out.

• Nudity is fine, lewd behavior isn't. That's Travis County's wording, and it's the unwritten rule everywhere.

• Bring a towel to sit on, plus more sunscreen than you think you need. Places that don't usually see sun will burn fast. (Curious why every body is different?)

• No staring. Eye contact, friendly hellos and minding your own business.

• Know the boundary. Many of these beaches are clothing-optional only on one stretch, and the rules change at the sign.

• Check for closures the morning you go. Storms closed Playalinda's nude end in October 2026.

Officially legal vs. just tolerated

Not all "nude beaches" are equal. Haulover and Hippie Hollow are officially designated clothing-optional, so you're in the clear. Black's, Baker, Gunnison, Collins, Playalinda and Kehena run on long tradition and tolerance, which can change with a new ranger or a new sign. Moshup is technically illegal under town bylaw, even though nude sunbathing has been tolerated there for decades. When in doubt, follow the locals and the posted signs.

What women really need are swimsuit shops that label their suits by category and sell all pieces separately because while I may have some beautiful curvaceous breasts I have the ass and hips of a twelve year old boy, so I can’t buy tops and bottoms together.

If I owned a bathing suit shop here’s how I would arrange things.

• All tops and bottoms sold separately and tops labeled by bra size. I’ve tried on XXL triangle tops that didn’t even cover my nipples. A bikini label can be very misleading.

• There would be a mix of patterns and solid colors so that mixing and matching different bottoms to different tops can be easy. I’m always looking for a versatile bottom that goes with a lot of different tops, that’s what he said!

• Suits arranged by functionality: Meaning all suits that have more support for those of us who like to play beach volleyball without having a nipple slip out or being in extreme pain every time we jump up for a spike should be put into a sporting category. If they can do it for dog shows they can do it for bathing suits.

• Suits that are barely there for those times when all you want to do is expose as much skin as possible while laying by the pool and sipping margaritas, can be in the tanning section.

• One pieces for those competition swimmers out there who like to feel as sleek as a dolphin while slicing through the water.

• And an all purpose section where suits expose as much skin as possible while still supporting your breasts in a sexy way and preventing nipple exposure (which really for me, would be the holy grail of swimsuits.) Sort of like a luxury swimsuit SUV.

Shopping for bikinis doesn’t have to be a nightmare, it should be fun. If you’re buying a bathing suit it means you must be about to do something involving fun, sun and water. What’s better than that?
